The new Smart TV LG OLED 4K and Super UHD

The new Smart TV LG OLED 4K and Super UHD

Today we had the opportunity to get close and watch closely the new LG OLED 4K and Super UHD that have a release date in Spain: mid-April. The new series of LG Smart TVs are differentiated, especially, by the arrival of new technologies thanks to the Alfa 9 processors that they incorporate.

The new Smart TV from LG is not exactly a novelty. Their new models were presented last January at the CES Las Vegas 2018, but they have finally set course for our country. Both in the OLED 4K range and in the Super UHD 4K, the latter with LED panel, it is incorporated what is the secret of its novelties, the Alfa 9 processors, as well as the development of its IA ThinQ platform that at the end of the year will integrate with Google Assistant.

On the other hand, both in the OLED series and in Super UHD, we will see the arrival of the first TV with support for HFR, as well as a renewal of the Web OS operating system that will reach version 4.0 and with it, the support for artificial intelligence real.

New LG Smart TV Alpha 9 processors

It must be said that not all LG TVs that will arrive in 2018 will have the Alfa 9 processor. Specifically the models will be the LG W8, LG G8, LG E8 and LG C8, which will debut. Others like OLED B8, SK95, 85, 81 and 80, will continue to have Alfa 7 last year. This new processor is the most powerful that the Korean company has launched so far, with improvements of between 35% in CPU and GPU processing and 20% for DDR.

For its part, the Super UHD Nanocell ranges of 2018 incorporate the Alfa 7, also within the OLED B8 series. These devices offer high quality LED panels, with deeper blacks, more detail in the shadows and brighter colors from wider viewing angles.

This new processor offers better image quality and purer blacks from any angle. The reason is that it incorporates a new four-step technique for the processes of eliminating noise in the image and banding, while the previous generation only performed it in one.

It is also the first processor prepared for the HFR (High Frame Rate), the last step for the emission of real 4K content. This is that it can process without problems the images recorded in 100 or 120 fps, depending on whether we speak of European or American standard, both in broadcast or streaming or from a local device (USB, Blu-Ray). It is true that there is practically no content in this format, which is being tested, above all, for sports broadcasts.

Image enhancements for vivid modes, video games, etc.

Although we can not show you an image (because they have not given us permission) we can transmit the sensations that an interesting comparison between the new LG 2018 and the differences with the 2017 and the competition has given us.

For practical purposes, all these improvements that incorporate televisions have resulted in very tangible things, for example, when using the vivid mode of the TV in which instead of saturating all colors, it only does so with the main which creates a much more balanced scene.

On the other hand, when connecting the game console, always offered a somewhat dark image. The new Alfa 9 processor improvements get a totally different look in the new LG. Brighter colors and much more outstanding lighting greatly enhance the experience.

Finally, the greater capacity of process allows to reduce artifacts, the «halo effect» of images with a lot of illumination and the noise that is generated around the figures.

Artificial intelligence and support for Google Assistant

Another of the great innovations that LG has insisted on are the new capabilities of its ThinQ platform. Through the «magic control», the command with voice recognition that some of their serial televisions have or that can be bought and compatible for the others, we can control numerous actions and functions of the televisions with the voice.

However, thanks to the new processors, this will be extended at the end of the year – coinciding with the arrival of Google Home in Spain and other European countries. Then, LG Smart TV with Web OS 4.0 will be compatible with Google Assistant and we can control all the smart ecosystem of our house as well as take advantage of Google assistant functions from the command of the TV with the voice.

Better sound and support for full HDR

Finally, among the new features of these televisions is the arrival of support for Dolby Atmos to the entire range in 2018, in addition to the new sound bars compatible with these TVs (SK10Y, SK9Y, SK8y) that are prepared to be compatible with Google Assistant … when the software update for Web OS 4.0 arrives that they have promised by the end of the year.

Along with this, we can not forget the new Cinema HDR functionality, which allows them to be compatible with the main HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HGL. HDR images are processed dynamically, frame by frame, using an algorithm of the company.
